Book Briefs: Preaching Old Testament Narratives

Ben Walton is president of PreachingWorks. Ben has taught at several schools including Grand Canyon University, Arizona Christian University, and Talbot School of Theology.

In Preaching the Old Testament Narratives, the author shows how the preacher discovers the message and delivers the message. In the first section, the author walks through what it means to preach, how a preacher communicates messages and does so with clarity, providing the theological message, and shows the “take home” truth. In the second section, the author shows various helps that provide clarity and relevance, understanding the different ways of preaching, different examples and how one points to Christ. This is a book that needs to be on Pastors shelves because it provides helpful content and resources for every preacher looking at the Old Testament.

Book Briefs: What Falls From the Sky

Esther Emery once directed stage plays. Now she writes about faith at http://www.estheremery.com.

In Esther Emery’s work What Falls From the Sky, she gives an account of how she removed herself from the internet, disconnected from the way of the web, and how this impacted her life. This is book is helpful to address some of the problems with the Internet and Social Media today and how it controls lives. However, wherever you are at in your engagement with Social Media and its uses listen to her story, take what may be helpful for your life, learn what you need to do and what not to do in your engagement with Social Media. Listen to her story, it gives helpful insight in a media driven culture, and apply it to your life His Glory.

Book Briefs: The Jesus Bible

The Jesus Bible is a new bible made by the Passion Group. This Bible is centered on Jesus, his Love for his people and plan for salvation. I like this Bible because it shows that all of the Bible is speaking of Jesus and that he is the main focus of all 66 books. The text of the Jesus Bible is the NIV. In the Introduction, it discusses this story of a Beginning , Revolt, People, Savior, Church and Forever.  This Bible also has various Christ-centered articles by John Piper and other helpful pastors. As Christians, we always want to get back to Jesus and the Gospel. The Gospel is what sustains us. The huge help for the Jesus Bible is that this is the purpose, the focus of every book pointing back to Jesus.

Book Briefs: Daniel Code

O.S. Hawkins serves as the President of Guidestone Financial Resources. He is the author of many books and preaches regularly at various conferences.

In the Daniel Code, O. S. Hawkins shows readers the story of Daniel and how Daniel engaged in a hostile culture. Hawkins wants readers to engage in the culture and learn from the life of Daniel. In our culture, Christians struggle with various things that oppose their worldview. This is a book that Christians can glean from and apply it to their life. Hawkins covers various things that the book of Daniel addresses such as what we tolerate. He also shows how Christians must live with integrity.

The goal of this devotional is to prepare your hearts and minds to focus on eternal things. We are made for His Glory. In the lives of Christians, we are to enjoy, display, and demonstrate Him every day. This devotional is very helpful to fix your eyes on Jesus.

Book Briefs: Saving the Saved

Bryan Loritts is pastor of Abudant Life Christian Fellowship in Mountain View, CA. He is also president of the Kainos Movement. You can follow him on Twitter @bcloritts.

Saving the Saved is a refreshing read for any Christian. In this book, Loritts engages the culture of the Church and America. He is very helpful in his assessment on what we need to hear. This book is challenging at times, it gives a basic understanding of the Christian faith, covering various topics, while hitting heavy on the Gospel. This book is for Christians facing the burn out or new believers to prevent burn out in the future. That our hope is changed by the Gospel, and our love for Jesus turns from duty to delight.

Book Briefs: Leadership Promises for Every Day

John Maxwell is an author and speak who has focused the majority of his writings on Leadership. In Leadership Promises For Every Day (Daily Devotional), he starts with a passage of scripture each day while commenting on its application for proper stewardship as believers in daily life. It is an interesting approach to a devotional that pulls stewardship, responsibility, and practical leadership from Scripture. I think this devotional is very helpful to someone who is constantly in the Word. However, my critique of this devotional is that as Christians we need to hold to what the text says first and foremost. It is not wise of us to take a text and try to make it say something that it does not say. All of that being said, this is a devotional that would be helpful for Christians who need to focus on aspects of stewardship and leadership for the glory of God.
